Job description:

A marine engineer is a proficient person who has studied engineering (sometimes also called nautical engineering) and is duty is to do maintenance and repair of all major mechanical and engineered equipment on board, operate and supervise machinery, also be skilful at teamwork and leadership. There are several main systems on the ship like the propulsion mechanics, electricity and power generation, lubrication, fuel systems, water distillation, lighting and air conditioning system etc. These are all included in the technical responsibilities of a marine engineer or engine department.

Duties as engine officer:

Briefly, Engine officer needs to have proper knowledge about all pieces of machinery in engine spaces, on daily basis you have to do monitoring and maintenance of mechanical systems depends of which detail you’re incharge in. Engineers of each rank on board is allocated specific machinery and systems for maintenance and monitoring purpose. Machinery systems are divided among all engineers and it is the duty of each engineer to ensure his/her machinery is running at all times.

Different types of vessels:

  1. Dry vessels
  2. Tanker vessels (oil, gas, chemical etc)
  3. Coastal trading dry and tanker ships
  4. Passenger vessels
  5. Dynamic position vessels
  6. Offshore platforms and ships
  7. Port assisting boats and ship (Tugs, barges etc)

Pros:

  • Perfect if you are an analytical and intellectual person who prefers thinking than talking.
  • Suitable for people who wants independence and likes to work on the own and make decisions
  • If you work hard, you will be promoted fast
  • Sallary is around 100 000$ + per year
  • Only job with 4 months + vacation per year

Cons:

  • There are more suitable careers out there if you are a sociable person who enjoys helping and working with others.
  • A considerable amount of work-related skill,knowledge and experience is required for this career. You can’t just jump right in.
  • You are isolated from family and friends most time of the year.
  • If you can’t stand isolation,rough weather,high temperatures,bad food it’s not job for you.pros_cons
